ACCESSIBLE BATH
A standard bathroom in a Newton, Massachusetts home was remodeled to accommodate the needs of an individual in a wheelchair. The original footprint of the bathroom was enlarged by expanding into the space occupied by a hall closet on one side and by moving a load-bearing wall on the other. A wheelchair accessible shower unit was installed and recessed—creating a level surface from floor tile to shower floor to allow for easy access. An ADA approved sink, grab bars, and accessories were installed onto the freshly tiled walls. The original 1920s toilet was revamped using custom fabricated parts. A durable high traction floor was installed along with a pocket door to maximize space for maneuverability. Wendel Klein Builders created a custom bathroom for comfortable use by all members of the household.
CAMBRIDGE LANDSCAPE & DECK
New owners of a Cambridge property wanted to completely change the look and layout of their back yard, deck, and patio. The back door formerly opened onto a large concrete porch that dominated this small urban yard. The yard featured an asphalt path, two areas for plantings, and a chain link fence. After decades of neglect, the yard and garden were in a state of major disrepair. In order to create a more functional outdoor living space, the garden area was reduced, and the patio was enlarged by replacing the concrete deck with a smaller wooden one. First, Wendel Klein Builders demolished the concrete deck, removed the asphalt path, and repaired the brick foundation. The chain link fence was replaced with a lattice and wood one--consistent with the fence style of the adjacent house. The yard was leveled, and a bluestone patio with a border planting area was installed. Wendel Klein Builders designed and built a small mahogany deck featuring wide angled steps on one side that can also function as seating. The side of the deck features custom bead board and mirrors the wainscoting found throughout the house interior. The final product is an outdoor room—an extended space for relaxing and entertaining.
CAMBRIDGE BATHROOM
The clients were working with a moderate budget and wanted to update their dilapidated bathroom without completely demolishing it. Wendel Klein Builders were able to give the bathroom a new look by replacing the toilet, sink and base, medicine cabinet, flooring, door, wood trims, lighting, shower rod, and other accessories. The original wainscoting was restored; the bathtub was resurfaced; the existing shower tiles were regrouted, and the antique radiator was refinished. Because the original horsehair plaster on most of the walls remained intact,
a fiberglass wall treatment was used to camouflage and strengthen the old rough surface. To reduce moisture, a combined light and ceiling fan unit was installed and vented to the outside of the house. Rotting wood trim was replaced with new trim that reflects the original woodwork of the home. In order to create additional space in a small bathroom, Wendel Klein Builders installed a pedestal sink and built custom shelving for storage. We designed and created a hand-carved backsplash to protect the wall between the sink and medicine cabinet. The end result is a bathroom that has a clean classic look consistent with the style of this l896 New England cottage home.
